About
I’m Dan Benn, a professional engineer and long-term public markets investor based in Ontario, Canada. I focus on a small group of exceptional, capital-light businesses with durable economics. I invest my own capital and publish writing that makes my decision process explicit.
I opened my first investment account on my 18th birthday and have been learning, reading, and refining my approach ever since, always with the same aim: understand what compounds and why.
Most of what I write is an attempt to be clear about decision logic: what must be true, what could break, and what I’d need to see to change my mind.
What I Optimize For
- Businesses that can reinvest at high rates for many years.
- Durable competitive advantages and clear “why this wins” logic.
- Owner-oriented capital allocation and incentive alignment.
- Long holding periods with low decision frequency.
What I Don’t Do
- Short-term prediction dressed up as investing.
- Overtrading, style-chasing, or forcing activity.
- Complexity without an explainable edge.

Outside markets, I’m a private pilot (PPL) and a long-distance runner, including half-marathon events. I’m drawn to pursuits where preparation, consistency, and calm decision-making under uncertainty matter.
